How to Download and Convert Movies into iPod Movies

Watching iPod movies is just one of the many ways you can enjoy your iPod. But hold on. Before you hit the Internet looking for movies to play on your iPod, there is something you should know. You cannot just click and play. First, you’ll need some helper software to get the movie into a format your iPod can handle. Although there are some companies that want you to plunk down your credit card for that software, this isn’t necessary. Once you finish reading this article, you’ll know how the secret to downloading and converting movies into iPod movies for FREE!

Step #1 of this free process is to install the latest version of iTunes on your computer. This is easy because there is a free version of iTunes waiting for you on the Apple website. Just click on http://www.apple.com/itunes/, read through the system requirements, and begin the download. The iTunes installation program will guide you through the necessary steps.

With iTunes installed on your computer, you’re one step closer to being able to watch iPod movies. The next step involves moving your preferred movie files into the iTunes directory. If you have not downloaded any movies yet, go to your online movie source and begin downloading. When the movie download is complete, there will be a .mov video file on your computer. Just drag and drop this video file into the iTunes video library.

Once the .mov video file is in the video library, a thumbnail image will appear. If several movies are in the library, you’ll see several thumbnails. To select one for viewing, right-click on the desired movie file. From the menu that appears select, Convert selection for iPod.

Congratulations! You are now converting movies into iPod movies. The conversion process will be quick, lasting a few seconds to a few minutes. The amount of time it takes for conversion depends on the size of the video file being converted. The bigger the file size, the longer the conversion process. The converted file will be easy to identify because iTunes creates a new thumbnail for the converted movie file. It, too will reside in the iTunes Video library.

At this point, you’re almost ready to view your iPod movies! The last step is to get iTunes in sync with iPod. Follow the normal procedure for syncing the two. Once you have finished this step, you’re ready to watch iPod movies – for FREE!

Review of The Devil’s Rejects

The Devil’s Rejects (2005)

Tagline: “A Tale of Murder, Mayhem, and Revenge.”

Sequels are a tricky proposition for most filmmakers. Often, whatever magic existed in the first film is lost by the time the second hits the screen. This is not the case with The Devil’s Rejects, a follow-up to the 2003 low-budget House of 1000 Corpses. Instead of simply regurgitating his first film, director Rob Zombie (of White Zombie fame) takes the legend of the Firefly clan in a whole new direction, and, in the process, he turns out a film which is actually superior to the original.

And in case you missed it, here’s a quick summary of House of 1000 Corpses: Four teens stop off at the clown-faced Captain Spaulding’s gas station and museum of terror. They become fascinated with the local legend of Dr. Satan and set out to find the tree from which he was hung, but they quickly run afoul of the insane Firefly family. After that, it’s not a case of will they die, but rather how they’ll die.

Rejects picks up sometime after the events in House, as an early morning raid on the Firefly family compound is led by a vengeful Sheriff Wydell (William Forsythe), the brother of a law officer murdered in the first film. In the ensuing shootout, Rufus Firefly (Tyler Mane) is killed and Mother Firefly (Leslie Easterbrook) is captured. Baby Firefly (Sheri Moon) and Otis Driftwood (Bill Moseley) escape and contact their father, Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig). As the trio cut a bloody swath across Texas, Sheriff Wydell becomes increasingly obsessed with their capture and resorts to more and more questionable methods. The movie culminates in a shootout that is equal parts Thelma and Louise, The Wild Bunch, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, not to mention the fact that it’s all in slow-motion and set to Lynrd Skynrd’s Freebird.

The first film was more of a monster movie with the strange Dr. Satan and his hoard of traumatized zombies, not to mention an albino Otis, subterranean caverns, and satanic Halloween ceremonies. For the sequel, Zombie sets much of the film in the light of day and transforms it into something closer resembling an on-the-road crime movie. Think Natural Born Killers but with more madmen to choose from (and that’s saying something). Dr. Satan is gone from the film, and Otis is strangely no longer an albino. This time our killers are more sadist and less supernatural.

But don’t think for a moment that this franchise has lost its bite. It’s every bit as horrifying as the original, mainly due to the unsettling events which occur when Otis and Baby run across the members of the musical act Banjo and Sullivan at an out-of-the-way motel. If watching Three’s Company vet Priscilla Barnes get raped with a pistol or Eastwood favorite Geoffrey Lewis get beaten to a bloody pulp doesn’t bother you, then you’re obviously made of sterner stuff than the majority of the American viewing audience. This is not a film for the squeamish, as evidenced by the fact that many theaters simply refused to show the movie. Of course, the fact that they managed to work in the F-word over 500 times in 100 minutes probably didn’t help their cause either.

But fans of the genre will not be disappointed. From a killer soundtrack by such southern rock icons as Greg Allman and Lynrd Skynrd, to cameos by such notables as Michael Berryman, Ginger Lynn Allen, and Mary Woronov, Rejects has a lot to offer beyond gore and cursing. And Zombie continues to demonstrate a real eye for casting–getting excellent character actors instead of high-priced “talent.” In the hands of lesser actors, many of the roles would seem just plain absurd, but this cast is able make it work and even make us feel a degree of empathy in the process.

And that’s Zombie’s most impressive accomplishment in Rejects–his ability to make us recoil in horror at the deeds of the Firefly family one moment and then laugh along with them the next. There are several moments when you can’t help but like the characters despite the horrors that they’ve inflicted on others. A few standout moments are an argument over ice cream between Otis, Baby, and Spaulding, and several scenes involving the trio hiding out at a brothel owned by Spaulding’s brother, Charlie Altamount (Ken Foree). It also helps that Bill Moseley and Sid Haig give excellent, nuanced performances. Sheri Moon also does an adequate job, although Zombie (her real-life husband) often spends more time getting close-ups of her attractive backside. One can only hope that this movie leads to even bigger opportunities for this deserving threesome.

On the flipside, Sheriff Wydell goes from sympathetic to demonic and back again. While seeking revenge for his brother’s death, he is driven to fight as dirty as the Firefly family, even going so far as to disembowel a prisoner, hire bounty hunters (wonderfully portrayed by Danny Trejo and Diamond Dallas Page), and torture his prisoners with a staple gun and hammer and nails. William Forsythe portrays Wydell as a star-wearing force of nature, and there are many similarities with Detective Scagnetti from Natural Born Killers. Both men slowly become what they pursue until it consumes them. But while Scagnetti could be playful one moment and lethal the next, Wydell is portrayed as constantly intense. The performance, while perfectly enjoyable, might have been a bit better if Forsythe had backed off from time to time. But that’s just nit-picking on my part.

The one performance I didn’t care for was Leslie Easterbrook as Mother Firefly. Karen Black portrayed the character in the first film, but reportedly wanted more money for the sequel and was dropped (like she’s got people beating down her door). In the hands of Black, Mother Firefly was a wily old hag who used her fading looks to ensnare men. Easterbrook gives her an outrageous southern accent and plays her as a screaming madwoman. Personally, I was overjoyed when she finally….(OOPS, don’t want to give anything away).

I imagine we’ve seen the last of the Firefly clan, but Rob Zombie has certainly carved out a niche for himself in the horror landscape. Whether he moves on to more commercially appealing projects or continues to make daring low-budget films, audiences can be certain that his imagery and stories will stick with them long after they leave the theater.

And, in the end, what more could you ask for?

Movie review – The Brave One

Following in the footsteps of the Death Wish movies and this year’s earlier Death Sentence, Neil Jordan’s The Brave One tries with every bit of skill and talent it’s got to bring more complexity to the themes of vigilance and revenge. Instead of merely attempting to make the viewers complicit in the enjoyment of watching the wronged protagonists stepping outside the legal system and taking matters into their own hands, it uses a great actress like Jodie Foster to see the conflicted emotions such actions can yield. Ultimately, however, even this story loses its worth as it cowers from examining the real social consequences involved.

Like the first Death Wish, the movie sets itself in New York City where we meet radio personality Erica Bain (Jodie Foster) who happily lives with her fianc

Meet Brandon Routh: Superman Returns

When young Iowa-born actor Brandon Routh was cast by director Bryan Singer as Clark Kent and his alter-ego Superman in soon-to-be-released blockbuster Superman Returns, there was a fair degree of surprise in Hollywood. While Singer had suggested that he wanted an unknown actor to take Superman into the 21st century, few thought that he would opt for someone with no big screen experience, as Routh had previously only appeared in a number of TV shows such as Will & Grace.

However, Routh has taken up the mantle left by Christopher Reeve with gusto, suggesting that the role has a tremendous legacy that the young actor is proud to be a part of. And insiders feel that Routh has made the part his own with a performance of both strength and vulnerability.

Brandon Routh was born in Des Moines, Iowa on 9 October 1979. He grew up in Norwalk, Iowa and then attended the University of Iowa, starring in productions at the Norwalk Theater of Performing Arts as he began his acting career.

Brandon made the jump to professional acting in the series “Odd Man Out” (1999, ABC Television), before going on to guest star in the series “Gilmore Girls” (2000) and “Undressed” (1999).

Trivia

Aged 6, Brandon was so excited about watching “Superman”, dressed in his Superman pajamas, that he gave himself a migraine.

Brandon went to a Halloween party in 2003 as Clark Kent/Superman. He was awarded the film role one year later by Bryan Singer.

The 21st century Superman does not just care about America, even though he was raised in America, his love is American, and he works in an American newspaper. Brandon feels that Superman has to be universal.

Movies Turned into TV Shows: Good or Bad Idea?

There is a long history of movies that hit the silver screen diving into television sets in the forms of TV shows. Some were met with huge success and longevity, but the majority of them were virtual train wrecks.

On the surface it seems like a logically brilliant idea: take a film that audiences adored and extend it into a more digestible, bite-sized version that they could watch every week from the comfort of their homes. But carrying over the success of a movie into the television realm seems to involve a tricky and delicate science that no one seems to know the formulas to.

A television series adaptation of the Blade trilogy and the recent news of a live-action Star Wars television series coming to life near the end of this decade beg us to ask whether or not either will succeed. Of course, success in this sense can be interpreted in a variety of ways. Does it depend only on the quality of the show? Most likely not, since there have been movie-to-television cross-overs that were critically acclaimed but were only given a few months to run. Does it depend solely on the popularity of the show? Not as much as one would think. So what does success in this genre depend on?

Let’s take a look at some TV shows that were originally movies that ran for long periods of time, and then some that burnt out quickly to see if there is a visible pattern.

Distance Runners

- M*A*S*H*: Many people forget that M*A*S*H* was originally a movie (1970) that was met with approval in the theaters. It made its way onto television screens in 1972 and ran all the way to 1983.
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The movie was released in 1992 and was met with very mixed results. Somehow the show managed to run for seven solid years (1997-2003) as a television series with a huge fan base.
- Stargate SG-1: Stargate was a film released in 1994. It was met with mixed responses, but the show fared much better, running from 1997 all the way till now.
- Highlander: The film version hit theaters in 1986. Audience response was decent, but the TV series that was launched in 1992 found a faithful following. It ran until 1998.
- La Femme Nikita: Nikita was a film directed by Luc Besson that was released in 1990 and received good responses from audiences. The television series had a strong following and ran on TV from 1997 to 2001.

Short-Distance Losers

- My Big Fat Greek Life: Though movie studios underestimated My Big Fat Greek Wedding’s chances for success on the big screen, CBS overestimated its chances for similar triumph as a television series. This big fat disaster ran for seven episodes in 2003.
- Clueless: In 1995, Clueless did well in movie theaters as a comedy-romance. However, when the movie became a TV show in 1996 it was nothing more than a vain, painful, and lame television experience. The show somehow managed to remain on air until 1999.
- Ferris Bueller: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was a huge hit in 1986, but the TV series only lasted one miserable season in 1990. Ferris has had plenty of days off since then.
- Planet of the Apes: The Charlton Heston-infused movie did well in the theaters in 1968, but for some reason the TV version only lasted one season in 1974.
- Uncle Buck: Was the movie really that great in 1989? It was just a standard comedy that tried to teach youngsters the idea of appreciating your family. So was the TV series in 1990 really necessary? One season tells us “no.”

There are countless other movie-to-TV shows that only lasted a few months, if that. Dangerous Minds, Fast Times, and Parenthood are just three of many, many failures in this genre.

The odds are against the soon-to-be Blade television series and George Lucas’ live-action Star Wars TV show. Though Blade does not really seem to be anything special, it will be interesting to see whether the vampires and monsters that carried the film trilogy will be able to do the same on television screens.

Star Wars does have an insanely huge and loyal fan base, the likes of which no movie-to-TV series has had the luxury of having, and could be the tipping point for the show’s potential longevity and success. But in no way will this guarantee the triumph of the adaptation. Neither will high caliber storylines or acting.

It seems that television audiences and studios are infinitely more fickle than their movie counterparts, so good luck to both the creators of Blade and Star Wars’ Lucas, both of whom will be at the complete mercy of factors that are virtually unknown.

Classical Movie – Why It Remains Relevant For Viewers Today

So what really is considered a classical movie? Can we simply associate as a black and white film noir thing? Containing some of those cheesy classical music? How about big powdered wigs? Do you think of the formal nature of both the characters as well as the period get-up and attire? Is a classic movie one which garnered 10 Oscars? Or do you think a classic movie simply one which down to the perception of the viewers and individuals?

The classical movie IS truly one of the great inventions since we discovered hamburgers. The classical movie is also the one show that we had the benefit of watching when we were kids, cause at the time only three television channels were available. It was during those good old Saturday afternoons and Sundays, when my dear father wasnt consumed by the sports programmes on show, when those classic movies from the past, movies featuring the glamour girls and the guys that inspired us boys to want to be cowboys, were made available for us to enjoy in all their splendour.

Though there is obviously a distinct difference between classical movies and classical movies with only classical period elements (music, costumes, storylines, etc.), I would like to address the delight of the classical movie of yesterday and today that does involve only a particular period of history and does, then feature only classical period elements.

I tend to associate the black and white flicks with the beauties and the beaus, the comedies with the curmudgeons, the histories with the insights into who people were back then, like us but with an added je ne sais quoi that we must find out, learn about, and finally to appreciate in as great a depth and as wide a breadth as we can, in order to do them the justice they deserve.

Say for example, my favorite classical movie of all time, Impromptu. This film basically enacts a couple of years in the lives of the characters George Sand, Franz Liszt, Freiderich Chopin, and the regal and wealthy folks who took artists in, allowing them to paint, create, compose, write, in exchange for wonderful company and fine entertainment. The film concentrates on Sand, who is bent on partnering with Chopin, her aggression equal in magnitude, as was his weakness. The costumes, the soundtrack, the dialogue, and the setting are all as breathtaking as the direction, technique, and the delivery of words and emotion. There is even a theme or two that humans from the beginning of time until today can identify with or appreciatethe love and hate, good and evil, as well as longing and belonging motifs that are as timeless as the movie itself.

Other classical movie choices I have an affinity toward are those less mainstream & popular ones. I would consider Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (though clearly POST-classical periods), Wilde, and Jefferson, for instance, as worthy of classical movie acclaim as say Amadeus, Emma, The Piano, and any number of Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson productions.

Apple’s 2007: That Was the Year That Was

The biggest Apple story for 2007 is the phenomenal number of great products it released. OK, perhaps not every product was great. However, they were all still exciting and generated significant buzz. What other company can say that?

Here’s my look back at Apple’s year. I offer my brief assessment of each new product — with the benefit of end-of-year hindsight.

iPhone Calling

iPhone. The invention of the year. The gadget of the year. The you-name-it of the year. Could this product possibly live up to all this hype? Yes. Definitely.

Of course, it is not perfect. Where is voice dialing and built-in GPS, for starters? I am already salivating over the expected 3G iPhone 2.0 coming in 2008.

However, the 1.0 version is still as close to an out-of-the-park home run as anyone could wish for. For my money, it’s the most groundbreaking product Apple has created since the original Mac in 1984. It’s already hard for me to imagine how I managed without one. Whether I am looking up a location in Maps, checking movie times in Safari, listening to my voicemail with the incredible ease of its visual interface, sending a quick e-mail message, enjoying music (which I do more often now that I always have an iPod with me), or playing one of the games I added after hacking the device, it seems that I am always using my iPhone for something.
Leapin’ Leopards

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. A mixed bag. Yes, it has some intriguing new features. I am especially fond of screen sharing and Back to My Mac. Time Machine is also a plus.

However, the more I use Leopard, the more I find that it actually offers very little in the way of “must have” features. Indeed, if I was forced to revert to Tiger tomorrow, I wouldn’t object. Actually, I would welcome a return to the Dock in Tiger (with its hierarchical folder menus) or the firewall in Tiger (with its ability to turn individual ports on and off). Then there are the too-numerous startup and login problems in Leopard (see my recent MacFixIt column for exactly what I mean here). I have the sense that, with all the other stuff Apple had going on in 2007, Leopard was not given the attention it needed. It may take until around version 10.5.3 before Leopard is truly a “finished” product.

More Needed for Apple TV

Apple TV. I own one and I enjoy it. I have it connected to my home theater system in my living room. However, my major use of it is for playing music, not video. For streaming music from iTunes, it is a far better choice than the AirTunes component of an AirPort Express — because Apple TV offers a video interface and remote control. Even better, by syncing files to the Apple TV’s hard drive, you can play music without having to be connected to a Mac at all.

For Apple TV to live up to its name and be really useful as a “TV,” it needs a significant upgrade. An obvious starting point would be some sort of DVR-like capability.
AirPort’s Landing

AirPort Extreme. If you are thinking of upgrading to a new AirPort Extreme Base Station for the speed boost of the 802.11n network, you probably shouldn’t bother. In particular, if you use your WiFi network just for connecting to the Internet, your Internet speed is a bottleneck that will prevent you from seeing any overall speed gain as compared to 802.11g. Actually, the speed result can be even worse than no gain at all (as I detailed in the MacFixIt column months ago), due to problems with signal strength specific to “n” networks.

Still, the ability to add a networked hard drive to the Extreme is a plus. Of course, if you have no wireless router at all, the AirPort Extreme would make a worthwhile purchase.

Touch: Crippled iPhone?

iPod touch. I have done an almost 180 degree turn here since the initial release of the iPod touch. My first reaction was: Great! Here is the iPhone-less iPhone that users have been clamoring for. Now you can have the iPhone’s touchscreen interface without having to pay for a two-year phone contract.

My more recent reaction, however, is closer to “What’s the point?” I know I am showing my iPhone bias here but … the iPod touch does so much less than the iPhone that I keep feeling the touch is just a crippled iPhone. For US$100 more in initial cost, you can have an iPhone with the same 8 GB of memory, all of its added features and save yourself having to carry around a second device as an iPod. If you are willing to go with AT&T (NYSE: T) as your mobile phone carrier, the iPhone is the way to go.
New Nano, New Life

iPod nano. The new nano is a worthy successor to the previous generation nano. I was especially glad to see that it now plays video, even though I suspect most users will not be watching much video on it. On the downside, I am not a fan of the redesigned “fatter” shape.

iLife ‘08. I still have mixed feelings about iMovie. It is definitely easier to make a quick movie now, but I miss the timeline controls that I now need to upgrade to Final Cut Express to get.

For iPhoto, its biggest new feature is Events. Personally, I don’t have much use for it. Indeed, it sometimes gets in my way, creating events automatically that I would prefer not be created.

The improvements in GarageBand are cool. I had fun with Magic GarageBand. The ability to easily make multiple takes of a recording is definitely helpful.

Overall, iLife ‘08, a bit similar to Leopard, is a worthwhile but not essential upgrade. Still, if you are upgrading to Leopard, you’ll probably want to upgrade here as well. Of course, if you buy a new Mac, you get the new iLife included.

A Nicer Workplace

iWork ‘08. Numbers gives iWork a spreadsheet, and it’s an excellent one, with Apple’s expected attention to visual appearance and interface details. Pages and Keynote have been nicely upgraded as well. The tracking feature in Pages is an especially big plus; animations in Keynote provide some fun new options. iWork ‘08 may not be ready to replace Office for most users, but it keeps getting better with each new version. If you don’t absolutely need Office, iWork ‘08 is a great alternative.

Those Mac ads. Finally, a word about those “I’m a Mac; I’m a PC” ads. Some may find them a bit irritating. Some may claim they overstate the advantages of a Mac. Some may feel they have begun to wear out their welcome. Not me. I still find them to be one of Apple’s best ever ad campaigns. I enjoy each new batch. I especially got a kick out of the special one that opened the WWDC this year (you can still see it here).

If nothing else, the ads are a fun way to feel good about the Mac, and why not? It’s been a great year for the Mac and all the rest of Apple. As I said at the outset, even if not every product was a complete success, you still have to be impressed by the sheer number of worthy products Apple put out. It’s hard to imagine Apple topping itself in 2008, but we’ll soon begin to see. Macworld Expo is just around the corner.

Movie Downloads – Review Unlimited Download Center

Unlimited Download Center is one of the best sources I have found for movie downloads. Not only do you get unlimited movie downloads you also get music. Both the music and movie downloads are from the largest lists of selections I have seen.

Unlimited download center is the fastest download site I have used to date. The site makes it very easy to find any movie or song fast. It is quick and easy to find all of the your favorite movies and songs. Once you’ve download you choice or choices you can quickly begin to play you movie or song.

They also have a free 24-hour technical support team on standby just in case you have any questions or difficulties. I have yet to find a site that offers this kind of quality service. There is no per song download fee, so you can download as many as you wish in the best MP3 format.

Most of the other sites that offer similar memberships don’t have this size database for selection. I absolutely love this site over all the other ones that I have tried. For movie downloads. I give this site a perfect 10 score. You’ll find that I never give any site that kind of rating. Click here

The unlimited download center gives you all the information you need to know before singing up along with a full demo to see how the site can work for you. They only charge a one-time membership fee, which is very cheep for what you are getting. You can make that money back after creating two or three cds or DVD movies.
